Product Description

Organic Bhutanese Red Rice is natural whole grained russet-red-colored rice. It is a specialty of Bhutan, a Himalayan country that lies between India and Tibet. It is grown in fertile valleys at eight thousand feet elevation on the southern side of the Bhutanese Himalayas, the side that faces the summer monsoons. It is irrigated primarily with thousand-year old glacier water that has flowed down the mountain. This glacial melt travels through gorgeous rivers and ravines and by the time it reaches the rice farms of Paro Valley, it is rich in dissolved minerals. Whole red rice has been used for centuries for its health-supporting properties. This heirloom Red Rice has traditionally been consumed by Himalayan people as a component of their daily diet. It is believed to support healthy blood, liver and cardiovascular functions, among other functions. Bhutanese Red Rice is very rich in potassium and rich in magnesium. It has a soft texture, and is very tasty. It can make a delicious base for a semi-macrobiotic diet or meals based on whole grain rice, garden vegetables, beans, seaweeds and miso. In Bhutan, it is frequently cooked with wild mushrooms, but any mushrooms will do. Organic Bhutanese Red Rice does not contain gluten, so may be used in a gluten-free diet or by anyone as a source of nutrition and energy.
