Healthy Aging Support
Aging is currently inevitable. But how fast we age is another thing. The aging process is largely determined by our genetics, but far from totally. Our lifestyle, the environment(s) we live in, our diet, how much and how well we exercise, our states of mind, our wisdom, the tonic herbs, supplements and superfoods we consume, our hygiene, and many other factors all play a role in how we age. Toxic cells will age more quickly than clean cells. Stressed cells will degrade earlier than cells that are protected. Well nourished cells will live longer than malnourished cells (even for those practicing caloric restriction). Certain biomolecules promote slower aging and others promote premature aging. Epigenetic changes (changes in our DNA due to environment) promote fast or slow aging depending on which ones we allow.
Slower aging is certainly the goal of everyone. And if there is ANYTHING that tonic herbs and superfoods are known for, it is there are age-retarding qualities. The entire tonic herbal system revolves around this goal, so the entire Dragon Herbs website is a guidebook to slower aging. However, there are a few main topics of specific interest, and here we’ll address them and offer some programs.
Inflammaging is a modern term developed in Europe over the past couple of decades. The inflammaging theory quite provably and accurately portrays the process by which humans (and almost all animals) age. As we grow older our functioning gradually shifts so that we start to develop minor, subclinical levels of inflammation. As these accumulate we experience “inflammaging.” Eventually, without even becoming overtly ill, we become older. This process corresponds almost precisely to the Taoist theory of aging, discussed in much detail in the Learn section of this website. Here are some products that reduce inflammaging.
Free radicals are key factors involved in aging. Free radicals, also known as pro-oxidants, are an inevitable by-product of energy production – our cellular metabolism and respiration. Free radicals are especially associated with typical inflammatory responses. Free radicals are “quenched” by antioxidants. Though antioxidants have not been shown to affect longevity in humans, they certainly affect aging and function in dramatic ways throughout the body and throughout our life. Free radicals can be significantly quenched by our own innate antioxidants: Superoxide Dismutase, Gutathione and Catalase. But these antioxidants are generally insufficient to match all the damage acquired in life, especially our modern lives. Certain herbs and superfoods have been shown to enhance our production of these innate antioxidants, improving our ability to manage free radicals. This is critical to slowing down aging. It is one of the great benefits of consuming tonic herbs (which can be consumed daily) and superfoods.
Here are some Dragon Herbs products that stimulate our own production of Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Glutathione and Catalase, our innate antioxidants:
In addition, the powerful antioxidants we can consume through our diet and from herbs are profound, even if transient as we use them up. Fruits, vegetables, tonic herbs and spices contain an abundance of profoundly potent antioxidants. Here are some Dragon Herbs products that are themselves supersized antioxidant providers:
Hormone & neurotransmitter maintenance and support
It is long been known that as we age, hormones and neurotransmitters decline within our body. It is widely accepted that, though this is a vicious cycle, the positive maintenance of these fundamental regulatory chemicals can have positive effect on our aging process. Certain tonic herbs can significantly improve our production of these chemicals. Here are some formulas designed for the purpose of supporting our hormonal and neurotransmitter levels.
Scientific research conducted in the last two decades has conclusively demonstrated the value of our gut microbiome in maintain our health. Through a number of processes, they impact our aging, especially via the immune system and our sugar metabolism.
Pycnogenol - A standardized extract of French Maritime Pine Bark. It contains the active ingredients known as proanthocyanidins. Pycnogenol® is a powerful antioxidant (free radical scavenger. Our Pycnogenol® French Maritime Pine Bark Extract is produced by a European phyto-pharmaceutical company and is manufactured under strict European quality control standards. Pycnogenol® improves peripheral circulation, strengthens blood vessels, and helps maintain capillary activity. It improves peripheral circulation by supporting venous sufficiency and supporting fluid circulation in the lower legs. By increasing vitamin C activity in capillary walls and strengthening collagen (intracellular “cement”), Pycnogenol® supports capillary activity. It protects the collagen-rich connective tissue in artery walls and joints and supports normal healthy joint maintenance.
